Cyclists and the UK general election

Posted by News_Sabreena in the Cycling forum at 30/04/2010 9:28 AM GMT

London Evening Standard: Pedal power could help to decide the outcome of the election, campaigners said yesterday, claiming that cycling policy could be the key to winning marginal seats. "This could really be the cyclist's election, and in marginal seats both locally and nationally we believe our members can really make a difference," said ToBogdanowicz of the London Cycling Campaign.

The Candidates' Debate

Posted by Dionysus in the General forum at 29/04/2010 8:23 PM GMT

I've been watching the build up on the BBC and it strikes me that David Cameron has already won a major victory. Nick Clegg arrived first: no wife. Cameron arrived next: out of the limo and immediately around to open the door for his pregnant wife, carefully chaperoning her into the building, the perfect gentleman.

Gordon should have stuck to his guns

Posted by Dionysus in the General forum at 29/04/2010 12:34 AM GMT

I've been listening to replays all evening. In my view, Brown's initial reaction was correct. Mrs Gillian Duffy (complete with tinted spectacles) did show an immense degree of bigotry. She objects to the fact that a reputed one million eastern Europeans (read Poles) have settled in Britain. Gordon justifiably made the point that one million Brits have settled in Europe (and bear in mind that the terms eastern and western European have lost all meaning since the Berlin Wall got kicked down).

I wish politicians would do their homework...

One thing is clear about Election 2010 - no-one from any side is going to let the truth get in the way of a good story. The Tories have decided that cancer care in the UK is poorer than Bulgaria because 176 per 100,000 die of cancer in the UK compared to 170 per 100,000 in Bulgaria. They use this simple, unexplained figure to complain about the lack of access to "cancer drugs" in the UK, implying that better access would get our cancer death rate below Bulgaria. They highlighted specific examples where, they claimed, patients had died due to lack of "cancer drug" access.

Universal health checks in general practice

Blog posted by skyesteve at 19/04/2010 4:49 PM GMT

Once more I heard today some wannabe politician talk about "universal health checks for the over 40s" like it was some kind of new idea and a panacea for our trans-fatty society (which reminds me, good on the BMJ for trying to encourage a trans-fat ban).

The BNP's health policies

Should the BMJ cover the far-right party's health manifesto in its UK election coverage?

I raised this at today's daily planning meeting, when we discussed not only the three main parties, but also what Plaid Cymru and the Scottish National Party are saying on health

How to quiz the would-be MPs on science

Blog posted by Anna Sayburn at 09/04/2010 02:32 PM GMT

At the Wellcome Collection last night, a panel including physicist Prof Brian Cox (of the fabulous Wonders of the Solar System) debated science and the general election.

I prefer to decide which candidate to support on individual, rather than party lines. I’m planning to email my local parliamentary candidates to find out their attitudes to issues that matter to me, including science. So I asked the panel for some ‘killer questions’ to put to candidates, to find out whether they were scientifically literate.
