Has anyone in this forum met a post stroke pt who lost total voicing?  I mean no volitional voice...only an occasional laugh as appropriate but no abililty to either grunt or say a word or anything vocal but who can breathe and blow appropriately?  She cannot laugh on purpose only if something is funny for the moment.  I am a speech pathologist and have worked for many years with a variety of patients post stroke.  But this is the first time someone is not able to dredge up any voice at all.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Susan

A detailed  history  and   complete  neurological examination to find the neurological deficit and background psychological assessment  is still the best way   including input observations from witnesses, carers, relatives
before concluding Total aphasia of the type described

I thought this post was very interesting and did a google around as i am sure you must have done. This does happen but seems rare and the prognosis depends on age, cause etc.
There is a nice paper with an email for the author at the end so you could ask the author as the series is of 52 patients.
