I was listening to a radio programme last night about football medicals. Players all have to go through a medical before signing on the dotted line for a new club, but what does it actually consist of?

John Hartson (former Wales international and journeyman striker) was interviewed and he said that medicals vary from club to club but usually involve a scan of feet, legs and hips, and an ecg. However, in terms of assessing fitness the new manager might just ask the player's current manager whether he can get through training ok. Hartson also was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2009, which his oncologist said he had had for 8 years.

What does a medical consist of? Should there be standardised tests or should it be up to clubs' own discretion to define what is necessary? Could the risk of Muamba having a cardiac arrest have been avoided? How expensive and time consuming would these additional tests be? Should clubs be interested in detecting heart defects, brain tumours, as well as metatarsal or hamstring weaknesses?

I have a 'sports' medical every year, because I'm >45yrs and I need it to keep my motor racing licence.
My GP listens to my heart, takes my BP, asks me if I have ever had epilepsy or "restriction of movement of the arms or legs", stands me in front of a Snellen eye test card( I know it by heart now, in line with "Space Cowboys" * ) shows me his book of Isahara colour vision tests (or he did until I asked, innocently,  if there were many acquired colour vision defects), and tests my urine to exclude diabetes.     All good stuff, I suppose, and  no more than you would get from a private clinic offering WorriedWell checks, save the MRI scan.
