I went to a GMC press briefing the other day and they gave us a graphic on how many doctors from competing nations have been granted a licence to practise during the Olympic and Paralympic games. They have registered 849 doctors from 141 countries.  They are only allowed to treat athletes from their own nation. 83% are male and France has the highest number (58) of doctors. Team GB have 18 doctors.

It's entirely up to the visiting nations to decide how many doctors they want with thier team, and within the constraints you describe, Matthew, Britain should licence as many as they want.  I'd love to see an analysis of these doctors' roles;  the cost of additional team members must be an influence.     There will be Gamesmaker (volunteer) sports injury doctors provided by LOCOG, as well as for crowd and like me, Field of Play teams, which is also right as small nations may have no doctor with them.

Can you get an estimate of how many Gamesmaker doctors there are, Matthew?   I know of a few, maybe half a dozen across the disciplines above, but surely there are many, many more?

These doctors are fairly known to their teams already and have been working / following the athletes as trauma doctors in the past and at present. They are familiar with their folks culture, language, etc. It is not surprising that they were granted the limited UK registration. First of all it is cheaper, secondly - efficient. In addition it is known fact that English (native) doctors tend not to speak other languages than their own. If a native English doctor is bleeped to the A&E for a patient from Brazil, he will need to require interpreters, social workers, etc.

Thanks for all the info! Not sure about the rest: Polish, Spanish etc may well forget to return back to their countries. When I remember how difficult is was for me and for the rest folks from my background to obtain Indefinite leave, to obtain  a viza, work permit, etc, PLAB and all the rest labor, efforts, red tapes, buroicracy, all sort of obstacles – well these people are really lucky. Don't worry, be happy and carry on, keep calm

I'm not sure what the beef is here with Drs registering with the GMC for a couple of weeks.

You all have the wrong end o't 'stick., and are rattling your own cans with them

These are TEAM doctors, who have come With their national teams and will return home with them.

If so few doctors have volunteered as GamesMakers then I feel especially lucky and honoured.

Further information I forgot to include:

More than 40 applications have also either been withdrawn or rejected by the GMC including one by Mexico for a vet and another by Venezuela for a masseuse!
