During the 2009 and 2010 season wheelchair basketball players reported on how many concussions they sustained.
A concussion during the current season was reported by 6.1% of the subjects. Of those reporting concussions in the survey 44% did not report their concussion to their coach.
Almost 15% of the male and more than 30% of female athletes reported a concussion during their athletic career.
This sex discrepancy is similar in able-bodied basketball and in hockey.
The reason why athletes did not report the concussion is that they did not want to be taken out of the game. Half of the athletes report they did not think it was serious enough.
Concussions may have several long term cognitive and physical consequences if not treated properly.
