For a dispassionate view of the Olympic medal fixation may I recommend this from The Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/datablog/interactive/2012/aug/07/olympics-2012-alternative-medal-table-visualised I note also as a sailor, Australia seems to be doing better on water than in it this time including in the K4 kayak. The Kiwis did well too and in the rowing. They bettered us. I admire sailors who can remain in constant form for 15 races. It is exhausting and one second of inattention can lose you a winner's distance. The vagaries of tide and weather are more variables in the equation. I could see the bitter disappointment in the face of the two GB sailors in the race yesterday to be beaten to the bronze by the Danes. It is only sport not war. Homer described this. |

In Response to Re: Is anyone going to the London Olympic games? Or what events are you looking forward to?: Thanks for the link Odysseus. Australia seem to be doing quite well when you ignore the gold medal tally. Same number of silvers as GB and a healthy number of bronze. Posted by mbillingsley Yes, our sailors have done us proud with three gold medals. The swimmers let us down. We have won the same number of medals as France and more than South Korea and our population is 20 million so we are not doing too badly. We have done much better in the past in golds but the goal posts have changed and we have to move on. The home team always has an advantage as we did in Mlebourne in 1956 and in Sydney. We are an outdoors people with a big coast and probably one of the most nautical people although one might think we all live in the bush. It was nice to see after the 470 class dinghy race when we won and you (BG) got silver to have the fathers of the sailors of both nations together arm in arm and celebrating. This is true sportsmanship and competition. It is great to sail against the best from all nations. Winning or losing, they are all winners in my opinion. It gives us hope. I think sailors by and large are a different breed from some of the athletes. They can all be proud and Croatia who won this one today. Australia ruined the America's Cup by winning it. It has never been the same since. Winning can be losing. It once was a great race with a great history. What is is now? The Old Mug ain't the same anymore. |

In Response to Re: Is anyone going to the London Olympic games? Or what events are you looking forward to?: Hmmmmmmmmm! Who was it who asked if sportsmanship was dead? Remind me - wasn't it an ancient Greek sailor? Who bemoaned the "sickening obsession by our media about gold medals". No, Odysseus, the Australian swimming team did not "let you down". They gave it everything they had. The question has to be, did Australia give them everything they needed? That should be the question the expected inquest will seek to answer. JOhn Posted by John D They did less well than the hype they themselves projected. I posted tThe Guardian ranking as this was not kind to Australia or GB but to New Zealand and Grenada. As now professionals as well as amateurs are in the Games, I think this makes it harder for the amateur. The US basketball team and the tennis players are examples. |
