This was a case of neonatal meconium peritonitis. The images show ascites with meconium plugs within the distended and obstructed loops of small bowel. The bowel walls appear edematous. Multiple adhesions are present within the ascitic fluid. See: http://www.ultrasound-images.com/ped-abdomen.htm#Meconium_peritonitis Joe. |

The newer ultrasound machines have fantastic resolution, and even the ability to pick up bowel pathology. You can't see the liver and kidneys in an x-ray study. You can even measure bowel wall thickness in sonography.. cant do that in an X-ray. Joe A. |
