Imaging is condusive to imagery. There is some amazing radiology art out there, for example from  Kai-hung Fung , who publishes regularly in Radiographics journal, and  Nick Veasey , my pers

Hi HR - you may want to check out the winners of the Wellcome Trust Images of 2011:

John, do you get scrapes and cuts on your knuckles?  Or do you use Knuckle Guards?

Thank you, kind Sir! But surely your anatomy is better than that, Oddysseus? I look like this in an X-ray, if I wear high heels or not!

Not Art, but Nature.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that science and engineering follow Nature, and that Art follows Nature too, epitomised in the aphorism of early 20th Century architecture, "Form follows Function".  So as a student of engineering, I am especially fond of images of the trabeculae within bones that show so gracefully how bone responds to stress, accepting it and distributing it to the best advantage.    The femoral head is a good example

Leonard - nice!  You'd imagine that being the kind of thing slapped up on the back of the door to an x-ray mechanics workshop!

skyesteve - a fantastic resource. thanks for the pointer. it does raise the issue of image manipulation though.  for example, the honey bee is a false-coloured EM image.  i think that all entries should purely rely on the true representation of data through colour...

john D - this is exactly my field...i am currently looking at cortical thickness around the hip with engineering software, as represented by the bottom left image in my icon. here is an example of an image i put together for a local research image competition (didn't get anywhere with it, though!) it is called gestalt: each small femur represents the cortical thickness mapped in cases with and without radiological OA. they are spread in the form of a canonical femur.

i did an ultrasound on an aircraft engineer the other night and we talked about how he used ultrasound to look for microfractures in aeroplane chassis. interestingly, he said that they had to get the big boys in to use x-rays to examine from cracks, which was interesting, considering that this is topsy-turvy to the perception of difficulty for the two modalities in medicine. anyway, it reminded me of another great nick veasey shot:
