Some of the media have come to the assumption that this paper is saying that there is no evidence that exercise keeps depression at bay but in fact the study states that increase physical activity for the clinically depressed does not necessarily improve symptoms.

Perhaps it is a separate debate whether exercise can keep depression at bay, or if you are genetically predisposed to getting depressed, no matter how much exercise you do?

However, I often hear many people extolling the benefits of exercise.  I often feel mentally more alert and happier after exercising (although for some reason swimming makes me fall asleep soon after), but do we often equate exercise as a cure for all mental wellbeing?

Yes, I believe that exercise is most helpful to mental and physical health. But we should remember that for Diseas, we must have need treatment.

much as we all know exercise is exhausting and so is stress..picture though when your mind is crammed up from all the office work and school work you battle everyday. Think about the stress reliever that is food. After a while you  will feel bloated and congested...a drink as a stress reliever aggrevates stress  due to the morning after effects..with exercise, you get a lot more.with increased blood circulation, the mind is rejuvenated. After the work out, eg swimmimg, you will sleep well.Diffuse perfussion leads to a general sense of well being. Much as people in the late stages of depression  can not benefit from this, taking the out for a simple walk will sure rejuvenate them. The neurological effects of stress on the body leading to tissue damage and altered level of conciousness and depression are not to be ignored as the major contributing factors to patient inactivity.

From personal experience I would say yes. Exercise helps to make you feel good about yourself and relax, and therefore you are more likely to feel happier and cope with your situation; thus giving a chance for medication to have effect. I think it is important to suggest getting more exercise alongside medication and other things such as counselling.

Exercise does help the patients with depression as only an adjuvant therapy to help increase the morale & confidence but in no way should the pharmacotherapy be discontinued.

I think the psychiatrists say it does. How it does it may be open for discussion. I find sound mental health may be maintained by regular physical pursuits.

There is a difference between a paper stating a negative result and the truth of the matter. I think we often swing like Gallop polls depending on the last paper we have read.

Odysseus, as they used to say in early days: Healthy mind in healthy body.

There are various explanations how exercise can help depression, one of them being that serotonin levels rise with exercise.Be it that or other mechanism/s, the fact remains that it does help.
