I am bemused by the latest article in the BMJ with regards to the above topic. I struggle to understand - why is that? And is it true? Obviously - it is true, because the article is based on some data. However where is this information from? Is it coming from the pay roll, or did they ask the lady doctors about this personal questions? I am a foreigner and struggle to understand why should ladies be paid less than men in a first world country like the UK. Jeremy Paxam in his "The Victorians" gives some explanations, but hey, we are now 2012. Can someone explain? |

Given the time-sensitive contact we have, If you do more work you get paid more; and vice versa if you do less. Therefore if you look at whole time equivalents there should be no difference. If you look by total number of employees you may find a difference if one gender does more hours on average than the other. |

I agree with Tim there. It is likely the differences are more to do with over-time etc. In the NHS we have a National Pay Structure (with variations to allow for local pay conditions) and it doesn't matter if you are male or female....if you are an SHO, you get paid X amount, Registrar X amount etc. That's it. It's the same with Nurses, Receptionists etc etc. Of course, experience also plays a part. It is vaguely possible that Men go up the Grades quicker than Women in areas but I have never seen evidence of that anywhere I have worked |

A lot of it has to do with pay progression due to time in post, mainly whilst a trainee. Time off to have children seems to impact mainly. At a consultant level one could postulate that as merit awards are policed by those who already have merit awards, there *could* be a system in place that favours men - I'm not saying there is, but it's a possibility. But the pay structure is such that a doctor is a doctor, irrespective of gender, or sex. So a doctor who has worked full time in the NHS for 12 years, and as a consultant for 3 (like me) should get the same money per session. If I do 12 sessions, and someone else does 10, I get 20% more pay. This is the same for men and women. |

"some of the difference may be legitimate’ and explained by factors such as experience, grade and administrative duties" Appeared to be unexplained? Not "Were Unexplained" but "Appeared to be"?. I'm sorry, but with statements like that, this report loses all credibility with me. Either the figures were explained or not, appeared to sounds like "I'm guessing" and that is not something I want to hear from the King's Fund or the ONS. I would also be interested in reading the original article to see if this is what was actually said or it is just being paraphrased. However, I stand by my previous comments on this subject....especially when they argue that Male Nurses get paid more than Female Nurses!!! If the difference in Medicine is because it is still dominated by Men, then Nursing should be the exact opposite as it is still dominated by Women. So, according to the Study, as a Male Nurse, I should be getting paid more than my Female colleagues....well, that is rubbish as I get exactly the same basic pay as someone with the same experience as me (I generally earn more because I choose to work more hours and predominantly nights which are higher paid anyway, not because I am Male).
