A recent survey has concluded that as much as 20% of Doctors questioned had not admitted their medical mistakes to their patients and that 1 in 10 had told their patient an untruth in the past year.  We all know that the best way to fend of legal claims and complaints is to be honest and open with their patients and maintain good communication.  The study recognises that Doctors do not set out to be untruthful but found themselves not quite being honest about certain things.

Don't be put off by the Fox News link, they just reported it.

No I hope I have not lied to any patients . But one has to make a judgment of how much a patients want to know. Conveying risk to patients is sometimes difficult and some of my patients want definite 'black or white ' answer. eg will this disease kill me or if I stop taking these tablets will I die? So someimes I have probably said 'No this disease will not kill you' when a more truthful answer might be I think that there is a 99 percent chance that this disease will not kill you .If there was a 99 percent chance that the disease would kill the patinent then I would need more time and listen to what the patient wanted to know. To some extent people hear the answers they want to hear.

Never say never, and never say always.

I believe we are all "guilty" at sometimes providing a bit of hope to our patients.
By that I don't mean lying intentionally. We humans all cling to a ray of hope, even if it is faint.
I don't say that one is allowed to distort the picture, and I don't mean we should say yes when something is no, but it is not always the "what" question, more the "how".

This is one dictionary definition of truth:
the true or actual state of a matter
But perhaps the true/real/actual state of a medical matter may not be known or perhaps is liable to differ amongst people.
