Adrenoleukodystrophy unravelled Currently, there is no treatment for the majority of X-ALD patients, particularly those with the severe cerebral form of X-ALD and adults with adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN). With a view to developing new therapies, the Eu-funded X-ALD project aimed to shed light on the function of the ALD protein; finding evidence that suggested the underlying use of the ALD protein through its expression in genetically engineered yeast cells. The research was successful in proving that the protein was 'capable of restoring the defective transport of VLCFAS': http://medicalxpress.com/news/2012-07-adrenoleukodystrophy-unravelled.html Whilst this research could have significant consequences in the development of future therapies, should existing nutritional remedies, such as Lorenzo's Oil, be encouraged by doctors in the mean time, despite their questionable efficacy? |
