NICE recommends that children, all children under five should have vitamin D supplements because they don't get enough in their diets (unless they love fish) and so we are bringing up a generation of weak muscled, constantly tired children and may be even teenagers (since they don't eat fish or run around in the sun much).
Would you give your child Vit D supplements? I don't know anyone who does.

Yes and I did when they were young,  I am a firm advocate for vitamins.

Bit wary of vitamins. I don't have children but I would like to think I could provide them with the various vitamins they need in their foods and showing them some sunlight.

However, having just spoken to luisad, she said that eggs -one source of vitamin D which children might be more open to eating- only contain vitamin d because the farmers feed the chickens vitamin D.... interesting!

Dr.MK doesn't say why they have raised this subject.  Where they inspired by the news report this morning?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16726841

Last year, a baby died and the parents were tried for child abuse - and aquitted because their baby was found to have severe rickets.
Now two pathologists have done PM studies on SIDS and 'shaken baby' deaths and found a high incidence of rickets.

The UK CMO wants all concerned with at risk groups to consider giving the mothers and babies VitD supplements, and the DoH is discussing (again) the question of universal VitD supplementation, by some appropriate means like Iodine in salt.

Can't see it happening after the hysterical howling that greets fluoridation.

Foods often are harvested from Vitamin deficient soils, also lacking in minerals,  in the last 100 years most of the soils in the usa are severely deficient in Vitamins, minerals, and nutrients,  hence some supplementation is necessary.   In south America the Vilacamba indians have perhaps the best soil and water full of electrolytes, microminerals, and a host of nutrients.    DuaneF

Actually I give both my under 5's vitamins and plan to continue to do so. Much though I like to think that they eat a very varied diet full of everything in reality they have their own view on what is and isn't palatable and it is not necessarily consistent! Vitamin D deficiency is very common, kids need lots of vitamins and I see no evidence of harm !

If you give your children ,meat, Fish, eggs, Vegetables, Fruits and bran containing grains, they should not have any vitamin problems. Vitamin in food is better absorbed than vitamin as drugs. So feed children well and they should be fine. With all the extra vitamins, I hope no body will end up with hypervitaminosis.

One theory on the low levels of vitamin D in children is that modern children spend all their spare time either indoors (playing computer games, watching TV etc) or outdoors covered in suncream (for fear of skin cancer and sun burn).

As a child suncream was reserved for foreign shores or exceptionally hot days on british beaches. We never bothered when playing out in the holidays or doing PE at school.

Where should we draw the line between risk of rickets and risk of sun cancer???

No I did not give my children vitamin sulpemement when they were little. Mind they were fostered so most arrived fairly fully formed. I would defer on food and diet to my wife. Quite a lot of my patients tend to be low in Vitamin D [cold climate, poor diet, Muslim dress and lack of outdoor exercise]. So we give a lot of Vitamin D , usually for the adults as calcium and Vitamin D. I dont think vitamin suplement do any harm unless taken in considerable excess. So if you want to give children multivitamins then I thinks is ok. And if you think it helps then it probably does. I have no problem with placebos , as long as they are cheap and do no harm.
