Medpagetoday had an interesting survey recently about the adoption of of innovative drugs or devices of recent times, where there is not exactly a strong evidence base that they are beneficial. What do you think is the most hyped innovation of recent years? I've selected a few but it would be good to hear if you have any other suggestions.

Drug-eluting stents.
These were adopted with almost no control, no investigation except to confirm their post stent stenosis preventing action, and none on the  duration of the antiplatelet treatment necessary.  There is no way of monitoring the effect of clopidogrel and many are non-reactors, yet as many find that they are on it for life, when withdrawal leads to in-stent thrombosis as the metal is still exposed, the need for more percutanaeous intervention and possibly more stenting.

What a clopidog's breakfast of a situation!

Robotic surgery seems to be the most hyped innovation of recent years.
It saves the precious time, & is more clean & accurate especially in patients who require a microscopic surgery.

Ashutosh,
I fear you misunderstand the meaning of 'hyped'.   It refers to over-exaggerated advantage or importance, in innovations that appear to be cutting edge but are not, that are publicized or promoted on minimal evidence.

I agree that microsurgery and (rather worringly from an outsourcing perspective) telesurgery are intriguing paths forward, but I'm still waiting for the reality of a ground-breaking application of robotic surgery to strike home.  Happy to stand corrected...

Dabigatran and rivaoxaban are a tie.  Both have been widely promoted to be universally safe and effective.  Suposedly coumadin would soon be relagated to the medical historybooks.  However, the more we learn about these expensive agents tht more skeptical we become.

Many thanks Dr. John for the timely advice & correcting me regarding 'hyped'
I sincerely admit the misinterpretation by me & at the same time was feeling lucky to be carefully evaluated by a maestro.

Among them, I would choose Drug-Eluting stents but there are others outside the list that has been so much hyped e.g. stem cell therapy which is way far being at the bedside. Then they have serious repercussions that scientists/clinicians have no clue how to address them.
