In the UK there is the clinical atlas of variation which is interactive - so you can put in your region, age, sex and see what you are most likely to die of. Mine was cancer. None were that palatable- CV disease was second. I had a small chance of being murdered.  Not sure why Richard Smith would put cancer higher than organ failure- as cancer has more unpleasant treatments.

Gerry- what do you mean re ethical? Richard Smith's tweet chimed with me. I think at least a  bit about how I am going to die and what I fear the most and I did wonder before I saw this post what other doctors would think- I guessed they would not want to die from anything that required protracted treatment that did not offer sufficient benefit. I would choose a sudden MI as I do not want to have 8 years of dementia like my Dad did. Do you think it is a tasteless discussion?  Just wondered.

Suprised at popularity of sudden death. You would want to make sure you had said goodbye to people and not had a row before you left for work. Sudden death is sort of sudden.

I am a consultant neurosurgeon at Yale.

I have the same question as Luisad. I am not sure sure what in the discussion do you find unethical.

Death is inevitable- you may not like it, you may not want to discuss it ( entirely your choice). I am curious to know what about it do you find unethical. I want to be educated to your point of view.

Neither,   I would rather die,  saving someone from a criminal,  perhaps in a shootout,   Yeah,    That will be my fate!     I will wander into a bank,  and someone will be robbing it, and killing innocents,  and I will intervene!    Thats it.     DuaneF

Such a "comforting" discussion.
Let us better talk about life and quality of life. It is not that I ignore the inevitable, simply the obsessive talk about death is not the best theme during those unbelievable hot days of August.

As a side note Yoram,   many people in the USA die of heat stroke in the Dog days of August.
