I agree with Dr. DuaneF in that the incidence of rickets is rising to a surprising levels. So even without a definate assay value, it would be better to consider starting a therapeutic vitamin D supplementation to the needed.

My daughter breast fed her first baby exclusively. She also slathered her with sun cream when outside for even a few minutes.i kept telling her that the baby needed vit D drops., Eventually she asked her health visitor about this. The reply was that had my daughter been on benefit she would have been given them! To offer the drops free to the less well off, but not to offer the knowledge that they are needed, to the mother who can afford to buy them is outrageous.

In Response to Vitamin D screening:
....Why this craze( in the past few years) for screening for Vitamin D deficiency ???..... nearly everyone I've screened has "low" levels : young/old/active/inactive/black/white......this seems like another scam from the pharmaceutical industry to sell more Vitamin D ....I'm scared to check myself : I'm youngish/healthy/active/healthy diet....& I live in a sunny country.. .

Thank you for bringing it up. As a practicing doctor from South Asia i was surprised that despite adequate exposure to sunlight , a large number of patients ( even from higer socioeconomic class) were having Vit D defeciency. In fact i have seen Vt D being abused here with children being  regularly administered large doses of Vit D and people with joint aches and body pains being adviced Vit D supplements without any apparent logic.

What intruiges me more  is that this Vit D def is reported from many different Asian and uropean  countries in even healthy , young asymtomatic males.

I will try to look up for a specific etiology for this defeceincy and will share here if i find an answer

Fortified Dairy products

Vitamin D just isn't a naturally sourced nutritious found in typical milk. Consequently, vitamin D is usually included. Commercially available milk, soy milk and also rice milk obtainable in bottles tend to be found to incorporate vitamin D.

Cod liver fish oil

Cod liver oil has been included in the listing of food resources for vitamin D. In addition to simply being a splendid way to obtain vitamin D,low levels can lead to immune deficiency, it's also discovered to be full of many other wellbeing boosting nutritional vitamins similar to vitamin A as well as omega-3 efa's.

Egg Yolk

Egg yolk comes in the collection of pure food sources of vitamin D. On the other hand, it's not a great choice for the people experiencing high-cholesterol.

Despite the fact that, undercooked fish is certainly one of the top food resources for vitamin D, cooking food effectively just before ingesting it is suggested to avoid all sorts of parasitic illness. Aside from cooking food over hot temperatures, be sure to stay away from deep frying, rather go with baked or maybe barbequed fish for wholesome preparing food.

CityAssays (Birmingham NHS path lab) offer postal 25(OH)D testing £20 each if you buy 10.
There are several reasons why Vit D levels are reducing.
Partly it's in line with obesity bigger bodies require more vitamin D.
Partly is corticosteriod use (these lead to Vit d deficiency over time)
Urbanization particularly diesel particulates teduce UVB penetration to ground level
High Fructose corn syrup also linked to lower vit d levels.

I self-catherise (Neurogenic bladder) used to get recurrent UTI e-coli became   antibiotic resistant, switched to keeping 25(OH)D above 125nmol/l and have been clear ever since.
Don't get seasonal infections or hay fever any more as well.
