May I introduce this into the discussion?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2012/feb/08/how-doctors-choose-die?INTCMP=SRCH

"How doctors choose to die"
The article is written by a US GP and academic.
I don't know how well it reflects what US doctors do, or if it transfers to the UK, but it claims that many doctors reject intensive anticancer treatment in favour of a shorter, better end.   And raises the question of why our patients seem resistant of that as an option, clutching onto treatment that can offer a possible few weeks or months of longer life, at the cost of severe side effects and much gold.

Just because we are not designed to die, but rather fight for survival, John D.

And partly because lack of knowledge and sometimes due to lack of trust and that slim to zero chance to escape the inevitable.

In Response to Re: Top five regrets of the dying:
Davebergie. This topic has hit a raw nerve. I suggest you lie down on the couch and tell me more. There is a joke: A man is referred to a psychoanalyst.  The analyst asks, "And what is your occupation". "I am a motor mechanic", the man answers. "Well just come over here, lie down under the couch and tell me more".

It is not rubbish. We live life and it is part of life to discuss life. I agree with most voters (42%) who voted for No 1.

My 39 year old sister in law recently passed away due to a Cancer.  What surprised me was her composure and acceptence that she was going to die in the very near future.  It seems that there must be a process of acceptance (ultimately) and of accommodation which comes about, but I can't feel that I would have such bravery and even serenity that she bore - but perhaps I would.  The dying achieve this place somehow and it would seem all the rarer that one finds the person who just cannot find that peace.  Could it be that the sudden use of opiates in lives never touched by such drugs brings a wonderful reprieve from fighting with oneself?

Well from above I've two options -
Working too hard
Not staying in touch with friends
I thought second option suits to me and finally I've voted Working too hard. :(

i would regret not finding a way to make we humans respect each other more, and accepting people as they are.

In Response to Top five regrets of the dying: My biggest regret would be not having used my potentials to the maximum, and having procastinated too many issues earlier in my life.
What will you regret most on your deathbed? Not spending more time at work or not making more money? Funnily enough you won't regret either of these things according to this article in the Guardian based on the findings of a nurse who asked people to name their regrets. Top regrets were Not living a life that was true to yourself, Working too hard Not staying in touch with friends  Wish I'd let myslef be happier Wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings  http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2012/feb/01/top-five-regrets-of-the-dying?INTCMP=ILCNETTXT3487 I saw it after a phone call with my oldest friend who said she never saw her friends any more because she was working too hard. So I've sent this to her too. What will be your biggest regret?
