What will you regret most on your deathbed? Not spending more time at work or not making more money? Funnily enough you won't regret either of these things according to this article in the Guardian based on the findings of a nurse who asked people to name their regrets.
Top regrets were
Not living a life that was true to yourself,
Working too hard
Not staying in touch with friends
Wish I'd let myslef be happier
Wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings

I saw it after a phone call with my oldest friend who said she never saw her friends any more because she was working too hard. So I've sent this to her too.
What will be your biggest regret?

I would vote for "Not living a life that was true to yourself" and it is a pity that it did not make itnto your voting list.

I can't edit the poll and I did try. It only gave me four options.
I agree- that living a life that is true to yourself may be the most important.

What a valid point; specially for us that still have the luxury of doing something about it. Such reflections enable us evaluate important principles and work towards a balance of the professional and personal aspects of our lives.

They say you regret the things you didn't do, not the things did, but wearing that Mankini at the department Xmas party in 2010 wasn't a particular highlight......

Live your life so you prepare for a good death.

I am surprised how well most patients take their imminent demise. I admire their courage.

It is good to die with no regrets. Regret is the fruit of guilt of perhaps beating one's self up; perhaps of the obsessional mind who has learnt little about life itself. We wanted it all to be tidy and perfect.

Je ne regrette rien.

I don't mind dying, I just don't want to be there when it happens.
Spike Milligan (1918-2002).

I told a patient recently when asked that he probably would live only another six months. He may well have said back to me (he didn't) that I have only one day to live for we can only live one day at a time. Our own false concept of our life expectancy is one factor which ruins our enjoyment of its wonder. We live as if we are to survive according to actuarial tables.

If we were all thinking all times about our demise, we would go crazy.
Yes, we discuss this, but we all repress and deny our inevitable end of road.
This is something that seems built in, otherwise we would all scream and panic 24/7...
You can only try to do your best.Sometimes it is OK, sometimes it seems we could've done better and more.
Shed no tears on what you could do when you face death, do what you think you should while you can.
There are two certain points in our existence: we are all born and we will all die. The way between those to points should not be filled by hurdles imposed by other humans. By that I mean we should be able to do our best and allow all others to do their best.
Facing our death we can ask two questions: have we done all that depends onf us to make the best in this journey, and did we get in the way of another person preventing him/her from doing their best?

Davebergie. This topic has hit a raw nerve. I suggest you lie down on the couch and tell me more.

There is a joke:

A man is referred to a psychoanalyst.

The analyst asks, "And what is your occupation".

"I am a motor mechanic", the man answers.

"Well just come over here, lie down under the couch and tell me more".
