Hello Fellows:

My best friend in the ICU has long been diagnosed with bipolar disease. He was not going well, then I told-him: Get rid of your shrink!

He did it some quite few months ago and is much better now with his internal medicine doctor.

I see very frequently my patients and friends getting all the time this diagnosis.

Is there a real epidemic of this disease or is it just fashion in the nowadays psychiatric world?

All Best,

Joey

My voices say, "No".

Lithium in bipolar disorder was discovered by an Australian doctor, John Cade from Melbourne.

An American would have chosen Americium and a German would have chosen Germanium. As there was no Australium, Cade chose the third smallest atom which was found to be useful in batteries; some bright spark, hey? Helium and hydrogen was no good as it was to light and gave patients an inflated ego. It also caused the Hindenberg to crash and burn so this was not a good idea for patients.

I find it surprising that such a simple element is so effective in BPD. It fulfills the adage, "Keep it simple stupid" which my voices told me.
