Of course! Odysseus is a sailor!
Senior Service, and I don't mean the cigarettes.
Anyone as anchor faced as he is should know he doesn't mean it.

Although some surgeons think themselves to be 'god', This sounds too much...

I heard a surgeon at a meeting a few days ago talking about "my theatre" as if he owned the operating theatre not realising that he is just as ephemeral as all of us and we are all on a VISITOR'S VISA   on planet Earth ie not PERMANENT RESIDENCY VISA.

We use the word god lightly here as I live in a secular environment where God is only invoked at times of crisis or in vernacular expression.

For  some surgeons to commit suicide would be considered to jump from the height of their ego to the ground....
Just a joke. Cool

In Response to Re: WHY SURGEONS ARE CALLED "MISTER-S" IF THEY ARE MALES, BUT - NOTHING IF THEY ARE FEMALES : Well, Old Chap, we British were born to rule colonials like that Australian convict riff-raff and those rebellious American Quakers, not to mention those unmentionable Indians with their infernal curries. You see, Old Chap, as God was a white man and was educated at Eton, and as the best bard in the world was that old Elizabethan chap from Stratford-on-Avon (to hell with Homer), well what else would you call a surgeon but Mister? Well if it is good enough for a midshipman, well why not some barbarous blood letting surgeon?  Now where were we before we were interrupted?  Ah yes, a bit more polish on my right shoe Boy and mind my new silk stockings. If you do a really good job I will skip your beating this morning.

It must be sai, Odysseus, as a public-school educated being, I thoroughly agree with everything you've just said, apart from the idea that God was educated at Eton, when he was clearly a wykehamist. In fact, I often proclaim such ideas in my stupendously inbred accent as I march down Winchester High Street with my companions in our top hats and tails. It's wonderful fun.

On a more serious note, does anyone know what are Armed Forces surgeons referred to as when working in a civilian context? Dr/Mr/Military rank?

I am a Dr, but have no problem when people call me Mr, as they often do. Call it inverse snobbery if you like.

Founex1,
I've known and worked with several military doctors, in fact before he retired one was the oldest Colonel in the British Army, commander of a local TA hospital unit and NHS consultant surgeon.  A neighbour GP is a TA doctor, who has served in Afghanistan.  None of them use their military rank outside the army.  In fact, I suspect it would be against the code to do so, like wearing your hat in the mess.

History my friend, rich history.
The number on the fellowship certificate is also thought to be in series for a few hundred years so I know precisely how many surgeons before me qualified through my college by examination.
Very rich, very proud history.
Getting a little bit irrelevant these days but the wonderful heritage is undeniable
