Whether a surgeon or a physicians,  we are doctors.Gone are the days when some Mr.Barber used to do his stuff. It's a way more professional and competitive era.Not everyone gets there to be called a doctor.Being there means to be a part of the elites of a society.

But i agree some people will not like to change the customs of stone age.Even if some 100000 collegues agree to the fact, there will always be someone. And he/she needs to be ignored for the good of rest of us.

All the postgraduate medical personnel should have a respectful title. Here, in India surgeons & physicians are both titled as Drs. & afterall surgeons are not barbers! In fact surgeons deserve a more respectful title.

I do not see why a surgeon should have a more respectul title than any other specialist. I am not into surgeon-worship. Some surgeons think they are god. I am an apostate; an atheist when it comes to surgeons.

When a surgeon passes their FRCS (This might be MRCS now...) they are referred to as Mr, or Miss.   This is ridiculous! Who invented it? When? I agree with drmk, I want to know too the roots for this

JohnD eloquently sets out the history of this nonsense. SO, in reality, it's now no more than a form on inverse snobbery and should be dropped. But equally ridiculous in my view was the decision taken a few years ago in the UK to allow dentists to call themselves Doctor which many of them now do. Talk about confusing the picture.

I think that seniority titles should be given to any doctor based on experience and number of people he/she has made a difference for. Nevertheless is should be at the discretion of people to refer who to him as Mr or Dr. "Dr" is already a respectful title, what is the benefit of distinguishing people within the same field? How am I as a medical student be expected to learn that surgeons, nurses, physicians, dietitician, etc... are equal when such thing is going on?Especially when women are involved! Shouldn't they be then called Ma'am,Mdam,missis..
Unfortunately, i myself have experienced the same with some surgeons, proclaiming that I have resrespected them by calling them "Dr". Till now it's a mystery for me really.... I think that all of this title thing is done to pump ego and that it should just be dropped altogether.

I'm with Odysseus - all my patients call me by my first name and are encouraged by me to do so.

In the US, patients call their physicians and surgeons as Dr. I encourgage my team in the hospital to call me by my first name.

Correct! Why can't we, in the UK learn some positive things from the rest of the world? Why englsih always regard themselves as superior nation?

Well, Old Chap, we British were born to rule colonials like that Australian convict riff-raff and those rebellious American Quakers, not to mention those unmentionable Indians with their infernal curries. You see, Old Chap, as God was a white man and was educated at Eton, and as the best bard in the world was that old Elizabethan chap from Stratford-on-Avon (to hell with Homer), well what else would you call a surgeon but Mister? Well if it is good enough for a midshipman, well why not some barbarous blood letting surgeon?

Now where were we before we were interrupted?  Ah yes, a bit more polish on my right shoe Boy and mind my new silk stockings. If you do a really good job I will skip your beating this morning.

Although some surgeons think themselves to be 'god', not everyone does have the same attitude. I am also a physician & prefer myself to be called upon by my first name.
Surgeons perform a critical workup & it is supposed to be 'positive & an active approach' that is why I humbly think of themselves to be deserving for a more respectful place in our society.

In a busy theatre, or some critical care situation, anyone calling "John" is likely to get two or three heads up.    So, call me fuddy duddy, old school, whingeing Pom, I'm "Dr.D" at work. But drmk, and everyone else, you don't appreciate the delightful historical reaosn why surgeons are 'Mr.' .   I refer you to the History page of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, at: http://www.rcseng.ac.uk/about/history In 1540, the Fellowship of Surgeons united with the Company of Barbers, to form the Barber-Surgeons Company, under the patronage of no less than Henry VIII.  Although the Surgeons later broke away, their college still displays the Holbein portrait of the Monarch presenting them with their charter. You can see the original this summer if you wish: http://www.rcseng.ac.uk/museums/events/all-the-kings-men-henry-viii-and-the-barber-surgeons They weren't physicians or 'doctors', they were surgeons and barbers, who shared a trade in the only real 'treatment' they had, bleeding, to remove noxious humours.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humours   That's the origin of the barber's pole, spiral red and white stripes, to represent a tight bandage around an arm to promote blood loss. John PS All the female surgeons in my hospital ( and there are many) are Miss, Ms. or Mrs.  J.

This really proves to be an interesting & delightful as well as introspective information, presented in a special 'John' style, with an eloquent perception indeed!
But in today's scenario it would be preferable to call every physician or surgeon as a doctor, as I think.
