A recent article published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine states that UK medical schools are not placing enough emphasis on exercise and its benefits, meaning many doctors are not properly advising patients of how exercise can help their respective cases. The study found that only half of Britain’s medical schools taught current physical activity guidance from the Chief Medical Officer as part of their curriculum. Also, five of the UK’s medical schools did not include any specific physical activity education within their teaching curricula. An article published by the Telegraph quotes “On average, students spent 109 hours learning about pharmacology - but a "negligible" 4.2 on physical activity”. Dr Richard Weiler (an author of the paper) responded “This is lunacy. We throw money at teaching them about drugs but not about how to prevent and treat chronic disease through exercise.” Should UK medical schools teach more about exercise? Should medical schools teach less on pharmacology and more about exercise? In which other areas do UK medical schools need to improve their curriculum?http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/early/2012/07/20/bjsports-2012-091380.full

But what is there to teach? The guidleines are all available to read here for various age groups and would take about 15 minutes to read and digest: http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Publicationsandstatistics/Publications/PublicationsPolicyAndGuidance/DH_127931 Then what? The comparison between the amount of time spent teaching pharamcology at medical school as opposed to teaching about exercise benefits is, in my view, fatuous. |
