About 27 hospitals in New York city will limit baby forumula- keeping it in locked cupboards only accessible to named members of staff as part of the Latch On initiative which aims to encourage new mums to breast feed. Staff who authorise the use of formula will have to state when and why it was used and provide that information to the city's health department. Anyone who has had a baby in hospital will know that it is very common to be asked if your baby would like a top up.

If women come into hospital saying they want to bottle feed then they will access to the formula.

The NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation, which runs 11 of the hospitals that have signed on to Latch On NYC, has banned formula from gift bags and promotional materials distributed in labor and delivery units but lots of other states allow this.

Opponents say that the city is making a nanny state and it is a woman's right to choose. But since the UK has the lowest breast feeding rates in Europe- should we try a similar initiative here?

We need to grow up as a society. So let's stop being offended by breast feeding. How can anyone find a mother trying to give her child the best nutritional start in life offensive?! Seriously, people who do need their heads examined. They really do need to grow up and get a life.
Breast feeding should be encouraged in all public spaces and on all public transport and anyone who tries to interfere or stop it should be prosecuted for doing so.

What is the advantage to limiting baby formula?   are the hospitals pushing breast feeding and if so why?   Is this not a freedom of choice decision?    Seems logical>    DuaneF

I cannot understand why some men and women are offended at the site of a woman breastfeeding? They often describe it as unnatural - what on earth is wrong with such people. A woman breast feeding her infant is the most natural and important thing a mother can do for her baby.

Surely it's a woman's choice?!

I want to breast feed when I have children but I won't be forced into it. If I change my mind closer to the time, or decide after trying that I don't want to then it's my choice. No one should bully patients into what to do with their own body and how to support their children.

I totally agree with breastfeeding and I really do believe that it is more than beneficial than bottle feeding, however, if formula is limited, then what the hell do they expect to do with hungry babys HAVING to feed by bottle... 'starve them, make parents bring in formula'.. Get sensible people, we already live in a really crazy world, do not start on the newborns for god sake...!

Hmm - agree that formula should be banned from promotional packs but making nurses sign it out like it's a controlled substance?!? That's just going to add yet more paperwork and admin for something that really shouldn't need it. How ridiculous.

Get more nurses, midwives and health visitors providing better quality breastfeeding support - that's the way to go, not even more admin crap!

Ofcourse, They should. What if there was no formulas available? There was a period like that. If any body knew all the real benefits of breast feeding for the mother and the baby, no body would ever want to bottle feed. No body need to worry about baby going hungry, since it is produced on demand, and the  more is fed, more is produced. I know twins being exclussively breast fed and thriving well.  Always stand up for breast feeding and it is the baby's right to feed from the mother. Baby' right should not be compromised.
