I have bought a cheap pair of shoes- pumps, that don't fit and have given me blisters. The last time this happened I was doing a locum in a London hospital which had the longest corridors in the world

I'm sorry LuisaD but where is the louboutin option? Surely it is not just the type of shoe but who makes them!

Comfortable closed shoes.  Not too high considering we spend a lot of time on our feet.  They are usually quite attractive but practicle for the work situation

I agree with closed shoes- toes should not be visible, and ideally not bare heels either. Teetering heels look ridiculous, but I feel more professional (??taller) in 2.5-3 inch heels, don't ask me why. (Am not too tall but don't like being talked down to (literally), maybe it's as simple as that, for me. I would not wear the same shoes to cocktail parties or bedrooms, have much more exciting stuff in my wardrobe.) For men or women, I don't think any doctors should be wearing trainers (ditto jeans and teeshirts) to a patient consultation, patients do need to trust that we will behave professionally, and our apparel will obviously not change our behaviour, but I suspect it might influence patients'.

I am a GP but have done various hospital posts obviously. I almost always wear heels to work, usually very high and often get complimented on my shoes, 8 times today, for example. Mind you, they were the most gorgeous Kurt Geigers. How trivial do you want us to get postee?

I have worked in in India and shoes shout your status, your approach to your profession, your standing in the profession, your attention to detail, your degree of personal cleanliness, and whether you are to be respected on first sight, or not.  Leather shoes, polished daily, not monthly, tell not only the Indian world but most of the rest of the world, an incredible amount of information about you, your profession and your personal habits.   Shoes on your feet are like the fingernails on your hand.   If either of them are dirty, ragged, worn down, or in the case of fingernails, chewed down, the status of the doctor diminishes in the eyes of the patient.  Dress should not matter if a practitioner is knowledgable, skilled, talented, experienced.   But, the patient has to get beyond the appearance before he can find all that.    The dress maketh the man, and in this case, the doctor.  The practitioner's attention to the details of his dress reflects his attention to the details of the patient.   Women practitioners who totter around in high heel shoes give the impression that they are either unstable or foolish, as the years in high heels shoes will certainly confirm later in life when they realise how much they have damaged their backs and legs by wearing high heels for long periods of time.

You should wear shoes that
1, are comfortable for the job that you do so if you are on your feet all day you do not cause blisters and walk funny.
2, appropriate for the time of your work. I tend to wear flats that make no noise on nights but love shoes that click clack for days.
3, reflect your standing and the impression you want others to have of you, i.e will patients take a doctor with scruffy shoes seriously.
4, if you want say something about you. Personally I love colourful heeled shoes and know of several colleagues who do also and I resect them for this (as well as admiring the pink heels that one consultant wears)
