Hypertension ,type II diabetes, asthma, raised cholesterol, arthritis, infections and depression are conditions that GP tend to look for and treat early because we wish to reduce the risk of complications. But as the BMJ of 2 nd June says over diagnosis may do more harm than good.
Are the pressures to treat too much?

Although as I think it quite necessary to start treatment of these diseases early in order to prevent the end organ damage & complications, we should not feel ourselves under too much of pressure to prescribe in haste as all the diabetics should be evaluated critically & carefully before labeling them as 'diabetics'. A sufficient trial of diet control with exercise & lifestyle modification are necessary to avoid overdiagnosis, same being applicable to the other conditions.

Hello Pat:

Thanks for your smart post.

If you are referring to drug treatment, I voted YES in your poll.

All Best,

Joey
