What do you think? Should the film “One flew over the cuckoo’s nest” be used as a rehab tool among acutely disturbed patients at our   forensic psychiatry wards? &nbs

The experiment , i.e. showing "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" to the acutely disturbed  male patients in a Forensic ( secure unit in England) will still go ahead next week??!!

Although myself and others  stood against this "idea",  it seems we are banging on the wall.

DOES ANYONE HERE know how to contact the Ethical review board? This experiemnt shuold have  ethical clearance prior to launching it!

You better try to read  the Trust  Policy first regarding all art therapies. Are there any  Trust Policies what should and should not be used as rehab&occuhealth in your hospital? Check and if not any, than raise your concerns why there is not any. As I said in my post yesterday I'd assume the managers have covered their back. I am sorry I only wanted to warn you. It is dangerous for your career to rock their boat. Have you spoken to other doctors in your hospital?

There are not any trust policy as you suggested. For the last two weeks and  several other  staff members have been banging on the walls, unfortunately this "experiment" is going ahead

I am curious to hear how were the risks assessed

drmk, it is now pretty clear what this problem is all about. Have you come across the 'whistleblowing policy'? It is supposed to be a position from which any member of staff can safely bring the attention of senior management (not clinicians) to practices that may be dangerous. Find it and use it (if you havent  already, I havent reead all the previous posts). It is to allow any person to safely 'shout' about dangerous practice. It seems to me to be the only option available at this time without expensive legal support which you should avoid unless the benefits of pursuing it outweigh the costs.

forgive my ignorance, but who is responsible for the care of the patients in the nhs. how come any manager tells the medical staff what to do. i would think the psychiatrists would be the ones making the decision.  but i live in oz, and despite our crazy politicians, patient care still seems to be largely in the hands of the medicos
.saw the film years ago. the decision is crazy

drmk, If anyone did so as some form of "treatment" then extremely poor judgement, if I may say so.

The good news is - someone has already  allerted the Director of the Hospital about thie  experiment. Watch this  space now

Would you wait to find out what the whistleblowing policy is, if you were in my position? Or if you were patient's relative and your son/brother is an inpatient in an accute forensic psychiatry ward and is due to be exposed to this film? Would you? And why always talking legal /laywers help? Why should one feel guilty to speak up, or  "lost" without legal/laywers. This is a matter of patient's care. It is not a criminal offence for Godness seak!
