It hasn;t started very well for the new chair of the new commissioning board. At the NICE conference this week he started his speech by saying his wait was like waiting to see the GP- you wait for weeks and only get 10 minutes. Then he is reported as saying that GPs playing golf were to blame for some eldelry people going to A and E. Professor Malcolm Grant is married to a GP so maybe he deosn't mean it. Is it just a joke or does it suggest anything more? Phil Hammond who was chairing the session suggested Grant lose the stereotype. Grant was the former chair of a large teaching hospital in London.

All it says to me - whether joking or not - is that the man is an offensive eejit. Not for the first time I will say how glad I am to live under NHS Scotland where none of this nonsense going on south of the border will affect me.

Good Lord!
That's exactly the stereotype that the Blair Government had of Hospital Consultants, not necessarily golf, but spending 'too much time' away from the coal face.   When the new Cosultants Contract was inacted specifying time spent at work, it caught them with their pants down and their pockets open.   Many consultants were found to spend so much time at work that 14 and 15 session contracts were necessary (for anyone outside the NHS, a "session" was four hours) when 11 sessions was the norm.

I am willing to bet that GPs work just as hard, and it is dismaying that someone as ignorant or lacking in common sense has been appointed to this critical post.

What I perceive from the discussion is that the 'new' chairperson is reasonably strict to follow a 'timely' schedule, & thence there are fairly good chances of a bright future of the organization.

Is it possible that the good professor's view of the way GPs spend their time is drawn from observation of his wife's daily round? Round of patients, that is, naturally.

What the hell are you talking about??? I am a single parent 56 year old. solo practic for 27 years and the best i can do is take care care of 14 yo son and try to get laundry done, by the way i had breast cancer two years ago. i have never played "golf" in my life!!!  Sorry, but this issue does pertain to most family physicians. Truly idiotic concern.
