Ward rounds can vary from a quick sprint to long, multi disciplinary marathons. I hadn't realised there was a shortage of them until the RCP and RCn announced today that staff don't turn up for them and when they do, don't give patients enough information. Their new guidelines for ward rounds say that patients should be given a written summary of that day's ward round and be able to book an appointment with their consultant to discuss their treatment.
Ward rounds are sometimes rubbish for patients - when the discussion goes on around them and doesn't include them but they can also be less than great for doctors and nurses on them. So the RCP's point that ward rounds should be a key part of the hospital's routine and be structured and useful may be a good one.
