It is a very dark place and after all - badly wounded .  It is horrible - the whole time of isolation, disgrace and ridiculePerhaps time will cure

MK,
Were you able to get support from your professional or specialty associations?
For instance, the Association of Anaesthetists has a "Support and Wellbeing Committee" to help anaesthetists with personal and career problems: http://www.aagbi.org/professionals/welfare/wellbeing-committee

I have no doubt that other specialties do so to, and the BMA has a similar support service: http://www.bma.org.uk/doctors_health/index.jsp

Please ask for their help if you haven't done so.
You don't say if you are through this dark tunnel yet.  If it helps and you can, tell us about your feelings.   In extremis don't hesitate to call the Samaritans: http://www.samaritans.org/

Best wishes
John

Dr mk, quite understanderbly you do not outline why you might be suspended or excluded. I would urge you to contact your Medical Defence orgainsation at the outest if you feel it appropriate.  I can assure you that threr are many excellent Medicolegal staff and support services available that may help to alleviate concerns and worry. If you have not already done so then I recommend you do. My own experience of advising Doctors on suspension is that they have a great deal of worry and strain on them and a lot of time to worry in. You are not the first to go through this and perhaps a discussion with the right expert can alleviate at least some of the worry

Best wishes
.

All UK Doctors have to belong to a defence organisation to be allowed to work. mind you MDU subscriptions are very expensive, and go upwards every year , but I expect they pale into insignificance compared to US  Surgeons defence subscriptions. I don't know if Doctors in other countries have to belong to a defence Organisation. Although [touch wood] I have never needed to use the MDU other than for advice I would not feel safe practicing with out it. Having to Pay MDU subs , if I do any locums after I retire is a bit of a disincentive to do any locums.

quote "All UK Doctors have to belong to a defence organisation" -
this was/is one of the lessons to be learned by  anyone in my situation. The membership at the defence/labour  unionhowever is not a mandatory one. What  would you do if you do not have a defence or other union support AT THE TIME of the suspension?

drmk - I am  not clear from your last post whether you have/have not worked in the UK. Wherever you are located it is always advisable to get legal advice if it concerns a professional matter or to see your own Doctor if it concerns your own well being. I do not want to pry into your private affairs but if it would help then you are very welcome to send me a private message here on doc2doc by clicking on my username i.e. kirked and perhaps I can point you towards organisations etc that night be helpful to you. I strongly suspect doc2doc members will be only to willing to signpost the way for help if you could give a very general idea of what sort of help you might be looking for. Just give it some thought. Do you have family or friends you would feel comfortable seeking help from?. Very best wishes to you.

Are there any forums, articles, discussions, statistics about doctors like me

If you were in my place, would you be feeling comfortable to discuss with family and friends  the shame, the disgrace and the humuliation,  you've been through. I rather not to

What is the usual suspension period ,is it constant for all types of suspensions or it varies form case to case?

Can a doctor be a part of research work, and other business(part time) that can of some help or is it like a prison that you can enjoy the magazine but can't enjoy the cake?

Can you shorten up the suspension period by funding for a humanitarian cause or just fill in a check as compensation for the loss you have caused?

Is there any relaxation in taxes you pay during suspension?

If your lisence is suspended in one country, can you just leave that country for sometime and try searching a job in some other part of the world? ( change of environment can help you feel better.)

SURB-
answering you:

No, if you are suspended, you are not allowed to do anything, just stay at your prison (at home?) and worry to death.
No research work, no training, let go - locums. It is horrible.
Any doctor, especially foreign, who speaks his mind, could  get easily in trouble. At the time of my suspension, there was someone else, who received a more linient "sentence" - he/she was only taken of the on-call rota. In my case however things got dirty and nasty - over than 4 months "investigation".  I do not wish it to happen to anyone of you.  The so called "litigation culture" in this country is a bit of a show. It is an industry too. They employ a batalion of "investigators", create a massive paper work, waste money on postage, telephones, milage, useless meetings. Why? Just to prove how "deeply concerned" they are if you can't keep your mouth shut and your eyes  closed. Ridicilous. Well, I am learning  this "lesson" - if this is what they want, I'll play their game. The trouble is that  this country pretends to be  "democratic" and liberal and the "freedom of speech" is welcomed. What a lot of hipocracy! It is even worse than China and Russia
