What makes a doctor senior?

Age might seem an obvious answer - but there seems to be a lot off debate around early review by specialists /senior doctors early on and 24/7 in the patient's journey but without it costing the NHS more? How would we do this ? The obvious answers seem to be to create a subconsultant grade or have seniority among consultants - I'm not sure either is that great an option - does anyone else have any ideas? Luckily for me I'm past the first but might still get caught by the second option! sadian |

A doctor may be called a 'senior' not only depending on his/her age but also the clinical skills acquired by him/her & pains taken by him/her to achieve the required expertise are equally important factors. |

Sadiah: QUOTING YOU The obvious answers seem to be to create a subconsultant grade or have seniority among consultants. Well - the answers are already here: subconsultant = registrar; senior consultant = medical director Otherwise you are asking for war |

These are answered in different ways. If you mean rank, this is easy. If you mean wisdom and righteous conduct, this is harder. I would rather share a foxhole with a wise sergeant than with a foolish colonel. If you question pertains to the NHS, most of us on this site are not in that bee hive.

My understanding is that according to NHS terms and conditions Consultants and SAS doctors holding the old contract are thought to be on a senior contract. In the new specialty doctor contract those who are in the Associate Specialist grade are senior doctors; the rest of specialty doctor grade no one seems to be sure. Rest of the doctors are junior doctors. Well, contract is one thing, reality is another...................... |

Posted by Odysseus Haha I understand where you are coming from but what I mean is that simply assuming senior=age in relation to job positions creates such a culture of 'one out, one in keep moving' in allocating jobs- which is the cliche I hate. although I recogniise that those who normally have the best experience are slightly older. |
