Of course not, but what they should do instead is make the clinic as effective for their staff as they do for their patients. That would be a very effecive health message.

The merits of good or bad specialists should be professional.
What about too thin doctors? Race differences? Uglinesss versus beauty?
Maybe bald versus hair? Or perhaps not older than a certain age or not younger than a certain age?
What is it with some of us that we seek the controversial, problematic statements?

In Response to Can a Hospital Say, 'Only Thin Doctors Can Work Here'?:
Saw a discussion on Medscape about a hospital in Texas USA, saying that it would not employ staff who are overweight because it does not set a good example to patients. Why should patient listen to a doctor lecture them on healthy eating and living, when they themselves do not practice what they preach? http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/764581 Is there a cultural difference here? US healthcare is not free so you may be deterred from paying for a health service where the doctor is not healthy themselves. Doesn't inspire confidence does it? But with the NHS, because it is mainly free, can overweight doctors get away with being overweight more so than our US counterparts?

Ofcourse they can. They do whatever they want, soit won't surprise me if they do it. However, we are talking England here and the "Equal opportunities" are in their full steam.
Mind overweight is most of the time mental health related They are currently fighting against the stigma, therefore  overweight doctors won't lose their jobs. Don't worry if you are 5.2 and 14 stones - carry on, enjoy your meal ( yourkshire puddings, pies, hashbrowns,  black pudd...) and  bon appettit.
Health promotion can wait

No. Knowledge does not always equal action. Someone can tell you the right ways to live even if they are not doing them themselfs. I am not overwieght, yet I could note to gain weight eat excessive calories every day. I belive that weight is only partially genetic as if you look at ancestors, and people around the world who consume lower claoire diets, they do not have many overwieght issues. I belive that its mainly about lifestyle. Overweight doctors may be knowlegable about what they teach, even if they do not practice it themselfs. Some doctors smoke, and drink alcohol yet they may not reccomend that to their patients.

It does not seems logical to deny employment for overweight personalities, as the causes of obesity are multifaceted & a familial or genetic predisposition is also as equally important as the dietary factors & exercise are. So, it would be injustice not to employ overweight doctors in a hospital setting.

I belive that weight issues are only partially genetic, and mainly about lfie style. If you look at ancestors, and people that consume less calories they do not have the weight issues that are here.

I myself am a overwieght and if my hospital had a weight policy, I just might be motivated enough to join a gym. I think patients would rather be told to exercise more and smoke less by doctors who actually obey these dictums themselves, otherwise I'd be a bit of hypocrite. Thank God I don't smoke!!!

No,   nor should they be allowed to say only heterosexual Doctors,  nor White Only,  Nor Arab Only,  Nor chinese,  nor Drinkers,  Nor smokers,   What you do as your life - hobby is not part of your CV in medicine. The Doctor should be hired on basis of skills and academia.   DuaneF

Let us all refrain from prejudice. That is the most important thing here. Only professional merits, nothing else.
