The National Trust have just published a list of 50 outdoor activities for children to do which got me thinking about things medical students should do before they qualify. This is the start of my list not necessarily in order of importance 1. Deliver a baby 2 Feed someone 3 witness a death 4 Change a nappy Please add on sadian |

Good Idea Sadian Here are my contributions 5. Be vomited / urinated on by a baby 6. Be vomited / urinated on by an adult patient 7. Then hone your reflexes so that the above 2 points never happen again! 8. Attend a cardiac arrest, and the discussion that occurs with relatives afterwards 9. Spend a shift shaddowing a HCA, a nurse and an FY1 doctor - ideally the FY1 shift at night time so you understand how the hospital works at night 10. Be comptetent at cannulating and taking blood - and learn all the crafty tricks used by FY1s to make the task easier |

I'd agree with vigour about going to study abroad, preferably having learnt at least some phrases in the appropriate language. But "be published"? If that means A Guide to the Pubs in Paddington Road, or How to cook spaghetti in 100 ways, in the Med School magazine, yes, I'm you're man. But peer reviewed research or even a case report in an reputable journal? Be realistic, how many can achieve that? John PS Who can? Me did. But I was lucky. |
