There are a number of organizations such as the American HeartAssociation that recommend 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week for its health benefit.  Certainly the results of the Diabetes Prevention Program would suggest that this is a worthy goal in persons at risk for diabetes.  However, such a time commitment represents a huge barrier to many.  Last week a column in the New York Times summarized the good news about briefer, but more intensive exercise.  The studies were based upon the observations that interval training results in rapid and sustained improvements in exercise tolerance.  The studies summarized in the column involved sedentary, otherwise health middle aged subjects, persons with known cardiovascular disease and persons with or at risk for type 2 diabetes.   The exercise program involved ten maximal one-minute intervals on a stationary bike followed by one-minute rest periods-a total of twenty minutes.  The program was quite effective in improving cardiovascular fitness in all groups studied and was also acceptable to them.  Those with cardiovascular disease improved and those with diabetes or at risk for diabetes showed additionally improved insulin resistance.  The papers are summarized here with citations:
