Hello Fellows:

A recent analysis of the ACCORD Study tried to figure out  if the increased mortality found in the patients under intensive glucose lowering treatment to a target HBA1C below 6.0 was related to increased episodes of Hypoglicaemia. No such relationship was found:

"Intensive glucose lowering (HbA1c target<6.0%) for people with type 2 diabetes increases mortality"

Conclusions from the above article:

Weight gain and other adverse effects of glucose lowering medications remain as possible explanations.
In practical terms, the very intensive glucose lowering used in ACCORD, targeting an HbA1c<6%, should not be used, and caution in targeting <7% should be exercised in the typical ACCORD patient – longer diabetes duration and significant CVD risk.

Any Comments or insights?

All Best,

Joey

Yes, I do agree that attempts to lower the glucose levels aggressively does raise the mortality rate in NIDDM patients.
