This Week's Tip

6 ways alcohol may protect your heart
In several studies, moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with a reduced risk for certain cardiovascular diseases. This latest meta-analysis of numerous studies on alcohol and heart-health was published in a 2011 issue of the British Medical Journal.

It suggested that moderate alcohol consumption (defined below) helps to protect against heart disease by:
Raising HDL ""good"" cholesterol
Increasing apolipoprotein A1, a protein that has a specific role in lipid (fat) metabolism and is a major component of HDL ""good"" cholesterol
Decreasing fibrinogen, a soluble plasma glycoprotein that is a part of blood clot formation
Lowering blood pressure
Reducing plaque accumulation in the arteries
Decreasing the clumping of platelets and the formation of blood clots

However, these studies did not show any relationship between moderate alcohol intake and total cholesterol level or LDL ""bad"" cholesterol. And while some studies associated alcoh! ol intake to increased triglycerides, the most recent analysis of moderate alcohol intake in healthy adults showed no such relationship.

dmMD,
In the Uk the recommended alcohol limits are:
Men 21 units per week, or 3-4/day
Women 14 units per week or 2-3 per day
The alcohol 'unit' isn't easy to get a mental handle on, but there are sites to inform you
http://www.drinkaware.co.uk/alcohol-and-you/health/guide-to-alcohol-units-and-measures#alldrinksarenotcreatedequal

But, is alcohol beneficial up to those limits or is there a lower limit at which we can drink to our health?!

I still cannot Wrap my mind around the Fact that Doctors Post comments on Alcohol being beneficial to you, when I it is clearly Detrimental to your health.   I have lost family members to alcoholism,  Friends to Drunk drivers,  and as a Law Officer seen thousands of lives ruined.    Surely there are other things good for your heart,  Like Grape juice,   Non alcoholic,  Good vegetables,  lean poultry etc.   Why the fixation with alcohol??    I believe a great many Doctors back it up because they Drink themselves, and wish to be psychologically free of Guilt!      DuaneF
