A recent article in the Daily Mail caught my attention: a study from Arizona State University of 350,000 people showed a marked decrease in obesity rates beginning with the recession in 2007. The results are perplexing because the decrease was not related to income except at the lowest incomes where the decrease was not seen. I am open to hypotheses as to why this happened, but for my 2 cents' worth it was probably the result of more careful (read cheaper) food choices, which generally means eating at home. It has been well-substantiated that children, at least, are less obese if they eat their meals at home. In contrast a study on childhood obesity during the recession showed an increase in obesity with 32 % of Ameican kids overweight and 16% obese.. The investigators from Duke suggested that this may be because high caloric, high fat food is cheaper. http://www.redorbit.com/news/health/1700617/recession_obesity_impacting_us_children/ |
