A recent article in the Daily Mail caught my attention: a study from Arizona State University of 350,000 people showed a marked decrease in obesity rates beginning with the recession in 2007. The results are perplexing because the decrease was not related to income except at the lowest incomes where the decrease was not seen.  I am open to hypotheses as to why this happened, but for my 2 cents' worth it was probably the result of more careful (read cheaper) food choices, which generally means eating at home.  It has been well-substantiated that children, at least, are less obese if they eat their meals at home.  In contrast a study on childhood obesity during the recession showed an increase in obesity with 32 % of Ameican kids overweight and 16% obese..  The investigators from Duke suggested that this may be because high caloric, high fat food is cheaper.  http://www.redorbit.com/news/health/1700617/recession_obesity_impacting_us_children/

I am not sure that is the reason. If I remember, during the last years there have been also more and more efforts to increase public awareness about the dangers of obesity. It might have coincided with the recession, but which is the dominant issue?
Many times the cheaper food is the junk food.
I would say that the best would be to conduct a study including a questionnaire about food intake, and habits of eating, plus there should be questions about lifestyle changes, and a direct assessment of the public opinions as to what the recession changed in their behaviour.

I spend more and more of my consultation time talking about food.

I found the mortality data on the Japanese population in the recent BMJ interesting. I know there was a fall in mortality in WW2 in the UK probably from rationing.

We eat too much. I have been using the principles of the Dukan diet and have lost 5kg. I was not fat to start.

Adversity is good for us. We learn more in our winters than our summers. We live longer on the lean that in the fat. The seven lean cows are better than the seven fat.

Less is more; more is less.

Yes, and now we find out that some products marketed as healthy are really bad for you:
