"US efforts to limit marketing of unhealthy food to children are delayed" Washington, DC The food industry is using delaying tactics to prevent the publication of guidance that would limit the marketing of unhealthy foods to children by 2016, an advocacy group has claimed. The Grocery Manufacturers Association called the guidelines “extreme,” “fundamentally flawed,” with “no basis in scientific evidence,” and “reflect an unwarranted bias against prepared, value-added foods.” Comment: As we can see there is a long way to go about societal changes to protect our children. We are at a cultural turning point regarding childhood obesity in the US. I am reminded of the process whereby we changed the view of smoking from being "cool" to being "gross". It took over 20 years. I hope the efforts to attack childhood obesity expand more rapidly. |

This is tied in with the joint attempt by business and Consrevative Government in the UK to prevent the introduction of a traffic light warning system for all food products based on levels of salt, fat, sugar etc.. http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Goodfood/Pages/food-labelling.aspx#Tr This despite the fact that everyone else thinks it's the best way to help people decide whether what they are buying and eating is good for them or not. Sucks in my opinion that business and Government will always put profits before health for as long as they can get away with it (tobacco industry anyone?) |
