In my opinion pocket sized echos could be very usefull in situations where there can't be performed a standart echo ... like millitary situations or post-cataclism situations. But on the other hand a laptop sized echo suits this needs as well. (another issue is the power managment not everywhere you can have access to your needed, in my case 220V )

Plus as somebody said before ... Students ( I'm still one) wouldn't afford these devices... we are still taught to work with steths... and should master this old technology first =) before moving to complicated one.

But the whole idea is very appealing to me...

While this cannot be the end of the stethoscope, it is definitely going to be a handy tool for bedside diagnosis of some of the cardiac problems. I would especially see its use in resource poor settings for screening clinically suspected cases and referring them to more advance cardiac centres.

Hand held echo can definitely provide quick aid in the ER and guide initial management.

Any one knows the cost of this equipment?

End of stetho era??? NEVER, stetho is as a basic instrument as a pen, we got type writers, which came and went, we got printers, but the pen still survives.... and so will our stethoscope...
Definitely the new devices would make life easier and diagnoses precise but the humble stethoscope would continue to exist as an extended ear of a doctor..

Many respiratory physicians don't bother to auscultate but rely on x-rays .

I completely agree with DrS!! plus no mater what new technology comes in a medical student will always be taught how to use a steth since its quite accurate, cheaper and with experience you will be able to know the type of sounds you are listening to ( as one my teaching consultants have said).  its kind a like the fact that we are still being taught to measure the Blood Pressure manually with an aneroid sphygmomanometer even though in hospitals its mainly done using a digital system, so I am sure the steth is here to stay!!Cool

Don't believe there will be something as simple and as effective as stethoscope for critical care, for example: auscultate breathing when patient is on mechanical ventilation, or for initial examination in ER. The portable echo is for cardiologists and techno-enthusiasts.

Agreed the stethoscope has survived the test of time and it is part of our identity as doctors. Portable echo is good for the heart (particularly if you know a bit of echo already) but it won't let you surgeons  listen to bowel sounds or help the chest physicians much either. It probably is a  useful tool for a cardiologists and might help acute medicine specialists too. Anyone who wants one can probably get one for around £6000!

In Response to Re: Is this the end of the stethoscope in cardiovascular examination?:
No medical student will be able to afford the pocket echo machinces, nor will have the experience to use one. And without our stetchs hung proudly around our necks how will the public know who we are? My steth with never crash or run out of batteries. I dont need to have worried about it being hacked and patient data being taken from it. It can be easily wiped down between patients and is great to catch the attention of a baby when I'm trying to examine it or assess its developmental level of reaching for objects Long live the humble steth

I do agree with you. Technological advances should never be at the expense of the essential clinical skills.
