Should we just go with atorvastatin given it is now generic and 'forget' simva?

I do not think we should be too quick to ditch Simvastatin. It is still cheaper than atorvastatin (roughly £1:50/month compared with £2:26). I am on it myself, and, although I have some increased muscle fatigue (vey mild) it lowers my cholesterol significantly more than other statins that I have tried.

As above - stick with simva until atorva as cheap/cheaper

The reason Simva now has so many recorded interactions is that it has been around for a long time so people have had a chance to report them. Atorvastatin will have as many / more because it uses several other cytochromes and has a longer half life. The main thing to do is avoid Simva 80 - If you need that much use something different.

The reasoning of which is cheaper is not a medical one.
What is "cheaper"? The medication? How about the side effects of simvastatin? They do not cause expenses? The important effect is the therapeutic effect.
There are ways to determine a certain polymorphism that makes one more susceptible to muscle damage from simvastatin, but it is not used yet widely.
In this situation, I believe atovastatin would make a better first choice, since it has less side effects.Even if it is more expensive.

Atorva has as many side effects as Simva - and as many interactions. Also, it is not currently on sale as a generic so still costs £26 (approx) / month compared with simva at £3 / month [according to Sept 2012 BNF]

Dear All:

Atorvastatin has been around for many and many years with fewer side-effects, and more potency than Simvastatin.

And it is generic everywhere in this world because its 10 years of patented drug is already done for a while.

All Best,

Joey

Simvastatin at lower dosage i.e 20mg is alright. If a higher dosage is reguired then atorvastatin should be preferred.
