That's great news that he has been discharged!

Sadian: how long do you think it would be before he can start playing again? What will the team doctors need to keep an eye on?

To be honest I doubt he'll play again - there was American data (sorry can't remember the reference) published some years ago looking at self-reported ICD firings in people who undertook sport and those who ran reported a good few. i'm not sure what his underlying diagnosis is but I don't think it matters.

It seems that he might have recovered from a fatal complete heart block.
But now when he has recovered luckily, he must be investigated thoroughly & treated accordingly. If the event was due to congenital anomalous pathway, he may be completely cured of the illness by radiofrequency ablation of the pathway & may be able to rejoin his team.
It has been a known fact that the sportsmen commonly tend to be prone to sudden cardiac death. The causes may involve prolonged QT interval.

I'm sorry but  I'm not sure that a team would be willing to take the risk and which phyisican would sign him off as fit to play?

It seems, sadly, you were right sadian. Fabrice Muamba has been advised by leading cardiologists to retire.

I've searched a bit to try to find out more about the medical background behind this decision. It was always a long shot that he might play again. But it would be good to know more about the tests he might have gone through or the type of advice that the medical teams may have given him...

I suspect he'll be OK financially, as he earned more in a fortnight than I did in a year last year....

But you didn't have an agent taking 20%!

Shouldn't we repect his clinical confidentiality?   Anyone who knows his details should be closed mouthed about them and as doctors we shouldn't ask, if we are not concerned with his care.

I agree, it's his business, and he has a right to confidentiality as much as anyone else.  He's in the limelight, though, and he announced very publically that he's retiring - he could have just retired, gone into the night, and no-one needed to know....  I'm sure he has his reasons for telling the world.

I think given how pubically this has played out he has done the most reasonable thing he could in terms of announcing his retirement. Although I thought this was the likely outcome I'm sorry that it has come to this. I still think the most likely diagnosis is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (not from any insider info I hasten to add!)
