In the light of plain packaging being introduced in Australia, and now New Zealand. The UK govt are carrying out a consultation on whether we should introduce plain packages for cigarettes.

Here's a short video showing perceptions of branded cigarette packaging. Mostly are seen as attractive "a nice little accessory", "you could match it with your outfit" and seem to appeal to a particular type of person. There seems to be a cigarette packet for everyone.

The idea with the plain packaging would make health warnings more prominent and the campaigners in this video claim that the plain packets will make people almost ashamed to possess them. Not sure if this is true or not. I think it could lead to a pro-smokers backlash, where owning a packet of cigarettes might be a symbol of protest and will maintain the glamorisation of smoking as a daredevil or rebellious act.

I suppose we won't know until it is introduced. What do you think - will plain packaging stop the glamourisation of smoking?

If plain packaging was such as yawn, why are the tobacco companies fighting this in our Supreme Court?

Why is the Ukraine Government which is in the pocket of the fag companies so vociferous.

The rats are in a corner and rats fight when cornered.

I am glad I live in Greater Oz.

I think the manufacturers are fighting because the packaging helps them keep market share and brand loyalty, not attracting new smokers.

If anything, by forcing plain packaging and hiding it. Then making tobacconists board up windows it make's it a bit illicit and anyone who was a teenage lad will remember that makes it more cool.

Wrong. Smoking intiatives in Australia have led to a downward trend in smoking. It is just that the rest of the world is lagging with fagging.

Lots of people are dying of smoking-related diseases here. We must view smoking as a scourge.

The tobacco giants hire some extremely clever lawyers.

As reported in the Guardian, they will claim against the Australian Gov that to prevent them using their well known images and logos on cigarette packets will offend the Australian Constitution, unless they are compensated as if their property had been nationalised.  That would cost an unreasonable amount, stopping the project instantly.

But fear not!   Armed with the Sword of Even Greater Legal Cleverness, legal experts point out that the Government has no interrest in and will not acquire that property.  And warding off the clouds of obfuscating smoke from the Giants with the Shield of Aussie Common Sense,  the Solicitor General says that the Gov. has been limiting tobacco sales for more than forty years and this is nothing different.

Go, Australia!    New Zealand, the UK and many other nations watch your brave action!
John

PS and if I may offer a shares tip - Australian legal firms will be earning zillions in the next year!

It would not look good for their business and public image if the tobacco companies took anything lying down. Allow an inch today and lose their feet tomorrowYell

In Australia we are different from many other countries although we espouse a vibrant democratic system.

We believe it a good idea to have universal health insurance and that tobacco companies should not continue ravaging the populace and that common sense should prevail over the right of every citizen to have a rocket-propelled grenade and a GPMG 60 (machine gun) in their possession.

I am glad I live in a country where we can see beyond the bull.

Light up the rights of lung health as we stub out the buts and no buts although the lawyers may yet have their day in court with their silk robes and their expensive lunches with the best red on the table staining their rich wigs.
