Have you been watching The Men Who Made Us Fat on BBC2?

It's a documentary tracing the various commercial, political and societal changes that have all contributed to the rise in obesity. The blurb for the programme says "more people are now overweight than undernourished."

I've only watched the first episode - but here's a few notes I made...

  • We are 3 stone heavier than we were in the mid 1960s
  • Reforms in farming in the US meant that there was a surplus of corn. This corn was turned into corn syrup - which is found in coca-cola, burger buns and fries are fried in it. Likewise, the cows that made the beef in the burger were fed on corn.
  • Coca-cola decided to use fructose sugar (an artificial sugar) in its drinks because it was 1/3 cheaper than sugar and because it is a lot sweeter than sugar logic would entail that less fructose is needed but in fact, they used even more, which only made it more addictive!
  • Fructose suppresses the lepton in the liver and stops signals to the brain saying you've had enough to eat
  • In the 1970s came the invention of snacking
  • Freezers and frozen foods were invented, and lots of sugar was added to these products because with out it, they would taste like cardboard
  • A myth is peddled which is that any product with no fat wont make you fat. But but sugar often its replacement and is just as bad

Matthew - you must read Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes - a most convincing argument that refined carbohydrates are fuelling the obesity epidemic and that big business is behind it.
