If you already use email as a patient communication tool how do you find it? Do you miss the face-to-face or is having time to answer patient emails a nice break?

what a good idea - for "routine" items e.g. enoxaparin for your holidat flights or repeats on contraception you could save an appointment. I've managed to pursuade my practice to allow me to phone with a blood pressure when getting repeats rather than having to find time to go in!

Surely this is the next logical advancement after telephone consultations?

There are both benefits and downsides to this, however it all forms part of the 2.0 movement in healthcare. The danger of course is that where in a consultation you have protected time with emails you could be deluged with patients asking questions and when do you find the time to respond and when do patients expect a response? From the patients perspective it would keep an informed trail and prevent confusion in what has been said. Maybe this is more appropriate for say NHS Direct as a pilot?

I do not have enough time to answer my patients by e-mail and I do not want to be disturbed by consultations or private communications both at home ,or at office.

I guess the key arguement against this would be confidentiality. We are repeatedly told that only nhs.net to nhs.net email is truley secure interms of internet security. I'm not even allowed to email patient details from my trust email account to an NHS account. How will we ensure email security?

We have a generic e-mail address just for enquires, so they don't clog up our individual e-mail addresses.  Works very well.  I encourage it's use - e-mailing simple questions is a great way to save time.
