The Health and Social Care Bill for England was introduced into Parliament today.

In the run up to this publication, political commentator, Steve Richards, wrote in the Independent  "This policy marks the end of the NHS." Was he right?

The following have  also recently expressed their doubts about the, now confirmed, changes ...

Nuffield Trust (charitable trust which produces analysis and debate on UK healthcare policy)
Parliamentary health select committee (committee of MPs who oversee Department of Health operations)
NHS Confederation(membership body representing most NHS organisations)

On the radio I heard a GP from Leeds say how he thought the change was a good thing as decisions will be made quicker and there will be less red tape. Does anyone agree?  I'm not sure I do.

I come form an area in the UK where the system has been trialled and it seems to work ok. However, it may only work well on a small scale, if it is implemented on a national scale I'm not sure how well a "market" based approach to the NHS will work. Although savings do need to be made, will patient care suffer? Will physician priorities be distorted by financial targets? If the BMA and even the Parliamentary Health Select Committee dissagree with the full extent of the proposals, then surely we should look into the other options available....

Pulse: Health secretary Andrew Lansley has insisted that his controversial NHS reforms are being piloted sufficiently, claiming the Government's pathfinder programme is evidence he has listened to GPs' concerns about the pace of the plans.
