As one who has got back in the saddle today after two weeks on the front porch chewing tobacco, drinking moonshine and reading cheap thrillers in Ancient Greek, I wish to share some observations I have made about the physiological effects of holidays which I believe (personal communications with a lousy p value)... spits a wad into spittoon.. that we need these like H2O and O2.

1. Sleep deprivation relieved.
2. Decompression chamber effect away from the hyperbaric chamber of work.
3. Right brain which has been shut down, wakes up. Left brain (I am right handed) closes down.
4. The horizon appears again having been lost in the fog of cr...vowel... p. The sun and stars shine too.
5. Personal space enlarges (no intrusions while at one's toilet).
6. Pituitary awakens and makes hormones again.
7. Appetite becomes pleasurable and no longer a way to sustain life between phone calls.
8. Bladder shrinks after being able to hold 24 hrs' contents, being in the Guinness Book of Records and mystifying your urologist that you have such a big "residual".
9. Fluid intake improves and nephrons become happy again having existed in desert conditions.
10. Reading actually becomes enjoyable as one ventures into a fantasy-land called literature where there are no patients, deaths of patients, calls from interstate, papers with deadlines and government forms to be filled out by yesterday if not sooner.

I rest my case lest I bore you with these evidence-based observations with n=1.

Odysseus.

Awesome Foray into your Holiday Odysseus  I offer the following description of my own experience,
1. Sleep Deprivation stalled, yet I still stay up late reading Sci Fi and fiction books on my Kindle Fire.
2. Drank too much coffee,  feel like a Gorilla strung out on Methamphetamines.
3. Spent so much time on phone talking to friends, my ear hurts.
4. Did not miss work, looking forward to retirement,  More reading time.
5. spent quality time cooking, My Favorites,  Swiss Steak,  Chili, Stir Fry -Duane is Expert Oriental cook, and eater of said food too!
6.  tried to clean and arrange my Den,  Still messy.  I need Feng Shui skills for new year!

Happy Holidays to all,,,   DuaneF

Ah - alas

The "holiday season" of the junior doctor...

500 miles driven!
4 x 13 hour on call shifts
3 x clinic days
2 x days off with family
and a lot of revision towards the pending part 2 exam.

I've now been awake for nearly 24 hours as I'm trying to pursuade my body it wants to return to a normal sleep pattern in time for my exam on Wednesday and could really use a holiday - just a shame I've only got 2 days of annual leave left between now and March.

Christmas is all welll and good to those who get the holidays off but I think I'm in the wrong career.

Bah Humbug (with bells on it)    ;o)
