A nun was a woman first and took up her vocation at a later date.  Who are we to be judge and jury.
If after thorough counselling and exclusion of all medical contraindications there are no medically known reasons of not prescribing the pill then the lady in question should be prescribed the OC if she wishes to have it.

Here we go again. Let us feed all women the great estrogen+progesterone mighty pill.
It will reduce cancer, make your arteries stronger etc.
What about thromboembolic events? How about risk of cancer if the poor nun happens to carry a BRCA mutation?
Never mind, let us feed the population with "chemoprevention".
Wasn't it recommended to every postmenopausal lady to take HRT?
How convenient for the pharmaceutical industry.
And the statin festival? We are still in the middle of it.
Ah, yes, earlier we were doing the COx-2 festival...
And the multivitamin festival.
Always look for the fashionable popular festival. Will we ever learn that there is no one magical solution for all?

I find the whole topic a bit Billy Bunter; nay tasteless.

How about some toilet humour. Imagine asking should muftis or Buddhist monks have testogel after the age of 50? There'd be an outcry (await outcry).

Some things are just in bad taste.

Lets come from the back of the boys' toilets, put out our fags and spend some time talking more than drivel.

After all we are a profession of the chosen ones with the intellect rivalling that of the gods (?God). I won't say the A word as this would be off limits too.

In Response to Re: should nuns go on the contraceptive pill?:
The reduction in cancer risks to the female genital tract by using the Progesterone pill has been scientifically documented. Further, women should have equal opportunity to reap the benefits of modern medicine irrespective of whether they are nuns or otherwise, in an ideal world. The next question would be how ideal is the world that we live in? Well, by denying nuns the benefits of the pill, how close are we planning to get to this ideal world? It is my belief that in the 21st century, one should not deny the benefit of a reduced cancer risk to nuns, for the simple reason that if a nun develops a cancer which could have been prevented by the use of a P-pill, the cost of treatment will be born by the tax payer and hardly by the catholic church. The choice should be left to the individual woman, nun or otherwise, and not to God or the church, who haven't given man kind much of a choice for two thousand years. Perhaps it is time for the flock to give the shepherds the choice!

It is true that studies show the OCP reduces the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer.  Before offering nuns the pill we need to see the incidence of these cancers in nuns compared with non-nuns.  Then an informed choice can be made.

But the OCP can be used for more than just contraception. Its also great for helping to regulate irregular periods and for improving heavy periods. Why should nun's not be allowed these benefits should they want them?

Who cares? if they live in the mistaken hope that they will spend an eternity worshiping some egocentric supernatural being - then they can go from whatever cause of death the same being deigns to bestow on them.

FionaC, this is a bit condescending about people who have a deep spirituality. Try saying this to a Moslem or a Jew or an Australian aboriginal or an Innuit.

Spirituality enriches the lives of many people. Man is more than a collection of well-ordered molecules defying entropy and the laws of thermodynamics.

My daughter attends a school established by the Sisters of the Sacred Advent. Holy Orders are not for all but as a society we would be all the poorer without them. Early hospitals and hospices in  Europe were mainly staffed by such deluded individuals.

Perhaps we could abolish sacred sites in Australia and let the miners in or drop a few more British atom bombs as happened for a decade on land inhabited by the aboriginals for eons.

Surely the occupation of being a nun is not the important factor in this discussion... The real issue is whether the absolute risk of malignancies is high enough to indicate prophalyctic medication with all it's associated risks.
Are nulliparous, chaste women at an exceptionally high risk of cancers or is it simply that their relative risk in comparison to their sexually active counterparts seems high?
It's worth remembering that while oral contraception has it's benefits, it also has the fair share of risks and side effects.

However, it may be worthwhile preventative therapy in women who have a particularly strong family history and are worried about their risk of developing such diseases.

Nuns should be allowed the choice to take medication, if the evidence suggests that it really would make a significant difference to cancer risk.

Am I right in thinking that some schools of Christian thought find the thought of stopping ovulation to be wrong however?
