Two members of the US Congress have proposed the Research Works Act which would see an end to 2008 policy adoptd by the National Institutes for Health which makes it mandatory for research articles that are funded by government to  be made free on PubMed.

The Association of American Publishers are behind this new act and along with Elsevier, they have spent $6.3m on lobbying in Washington, with the attempt to end free access for these articles.

Should this type of research be kept free? Is it right for publishers to make a profit from government funded research?

Altruism, the brotherhood of man (and the occasional woman) and the noble traditions of Hippocrates demands that these pearls of science be made gratis for all to share the benefits of their scientific effulgence.

Now what was the question?

This is sad news especially when publishers are lobbying politicians and trying to make it happen. First of all, the scientific work should be accessible to all (I salute BMJ's policy of making original articles free).  Secondly, the government money is tax money (from people). Hence, there should not be any debate about it on making free access.

The research works, the interest in the field and publication interest will all be affected if the policy is to be adopted. Government should be proactive to make it free rather than working in favour of profit-making industries.

I hope it doesn't happen.

I Agree with Matiram - If tax payers money has funded the research then the results of the work should be available to all

There are a number of journals that do not allow the readers to freely access their articles.

Shame on them!

The majority of them are in the USA.

Protest against Elsevier goes on :

I agree about the point difficulty to biomedical section in which they have likes of Lancet and Cell. It is strange they lobby up in the policy making level.
