My local supermarket is Sainsburys and they do have food labels on quite a few of their products, which I find very helpful. The traffic light colour coding of how much salt, sugar, saturated fat, calories etc is great and helps me steer clear from any products that have red on them.
Tim Lang, professor of food policy at City University London, said “For years, nutrition labelling has been a mess but a deliberate mess. Government allowed powerful players in the food industry to resist introducing the scheme that consumers liked best and understood most easily, namely traffic lights."
The government are "confident" that other big chains will adopt this new system but it is only voluntary. Should it be compulsory?
