Should Coca-cola reward designated drivers?

The festive season is upon us and so are all the Christmas parties.

The Department of Transport in England has teamed up with Coca-cola to give a buy one get one free offer to all designated drivers, who are ferrying back their inebriated friends and colleagues. The campaign starts today (9th December and runs until 31 December) across 8,00 pubs, bars and clubs.

What I would like to know is how do you prove you are a designated driver and not someone who just wants a cheap deal on some Coca-cola?

Whilst I salute the designated drivers over this season, is it ok for Coca-cola to exclusively reward designated drivers for not drinking?

This is an example of government working with industry to improve outcomes (by keeping roads safe) - but isn't it also promoting the brand. I know there are competitors on the market but Coca-cola seem to be the most popular fizzy soft drink out there, so is this government backed scheme primarily enhancing the Coca-cola brand, rather than reinforcing the behaviour and belief that drink-driving is dangerous??

Should we teach moral lessons through coupons?

This'll be part of the Coalition's 'nudge' policies.  They don't legislate, they offer inducements, in the hope that this will solve the problem.   Bit like Mr.Micawber, "Something will turn up", and in this case it's a megacompany that sees the opportunity for big publicity at small cost.

They are applying the same policies to healthcare.  We're doomed.

Anything which reduces road deaths in the UK christmas period due to alcohol can only be a good thing. As someone who lost a relative in a road accident it doesn't just affect the patient, but the entire extended family, and justice can take 18 months or more after a road accident to find and answers

In Response to Re: Should Coca-cola reward designated drivers?:
This is already done in major league baseball parks in the USA.  A designated driver is issued an identifying wrist band and two coupons for free soft drinks from the Cocal-Cola company.  There is no literature on whether this reduces drunk driving . . . but it is much appreciated by the recipients and it does raise awareness of the issue.  Also, no alcohol is sold in the ball parks after the 7th (of 9 plus possible overtime) inning.
