No, nothing to do with the Olympics. I am talking about the US Presidential election race. With the announcement of Paul Ryan as the Republican running mate it seems that once again healthcare will become a major election battle ground. Mr Ryan is proposing radical changes to Medicare and even some on the right are not comfortable with his ideas. I don't really have a view as it will not impact on me but I would be grateful for opinions of my trans-Atlantic colleagues. Hi Steve, I analysed the outcome of Ryans plans, and they appear to help our system, I know you will disagree, but the voucher or packet system discussed will make it better. In the end the class of people who decide to stay at home and not work, WELFARE! Will always be covered, and I will pay their way with taxes. Time will tell in the end. I think our system could use some improvements. DuaneF n Response to The race is on!: No, nothing to do with the Olympics. I am talking about the US Presidential election race. I would recommend this blog by Trudy Lieberman: What makes Paul Ryan tick? It reveals some of the thinking behind Romney's running mate, in terms of tackling the budget deficit (namely by privatising medicare, which costs the US taxpayer $551bn per year) http://www.cjr.org/campaign_desk/what_makes_paul_ryan_tick.php |

Thanks Steve, I would one day like to speak with you at length about this problem. I see many problems with our US system, and wonder if we might learn from other countries like scotland, and UK. I implemented many things I learned from the German system into my Defense consulting. So many projects so little time. DuaneF In Response to Re: US Presidential election: The race is on!: Hi Duane - as I said above I have no real view one way or the other about Mr Ryan's proposals. I just genuinely wanted to know what US colleagues thought as I have always had a deep interest in US Presidential elections and this is clearly going to be a major area of debate. But thanks for your views - much appreciated and just what I am looking for. Posted by skyesteve |

For a nice historical review of US health reform efforts I suggest http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp1202111?query=TOC that was just published in the New England Journal. In terms of the 2013 Romney/Ryan plan there does not seem to be one or at least, the details are not available. The last Ryan plan passed by Congress in 2011 assumed the same $716 reduction in Medicare expenditures as the ACA. The original Ryan plan would also cost those subject to it (those currently at age 55) about $6,000/annual out--of -pocket expenses according to the Congressional Budget Office’s non-partisan analysis. Here is an objective review from Fact Checker Now that Romney and Ryan are stating that the plan passed by the House in 2011 is not their plan and are blasting Obama for the same reduction as in the 2011 Ryan plan, we will have to await the new, new Republican plan. Since we do not know the content of the new Ryan plan (and if i were a Republican strategist, I would not reveal the specifics until after the election) we cannot cost it out. The bottom line is that the subject is so hot that we are having a tough time getting our hands around it. I believe that Aaron Carroll of CNN has given the most objective and understandable analysis. http://www.cnn.com/2012/08/14/opinion/carroll-medicaid-medicare-ryan/index.html |
